Epigenetics - Genes are not Superior
Posted on 2010-02-06 15:01:39
New research has proven that our genes have not changed at all. Why is it that cancer, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, pulmonary conditions have been the top killers for Americans in the past 60 years or so? Have our genes changed from 100 years ago until now? Research shows that our genes have only changed 0.02% in the past 40,000 years. So, the question is, is it really our genes that control our body? How could our genes that haven't changed at all be the dictator to tell us what disease we will die of and how long of a life we will live?
In the past decade, we have coined a new term to understand what controls our genes and it is called, "Epigenetics." Epigenetics has unlocked the hidden truth to our genes and our life. It has been proven that it is not our genes that control our life but our lifestyle and our environment. It is the choices we make that determine our outcome on health. A question to ask is, if you want to be healthy, can you? Can you choose health rather than have it by chance? Would you rather choose to gamble the most sacred thing you have is your body and your life rather than make the choice to be healthy? In many religious texts, it states, "Your body is your temple. It is the temple that gives home to your soul, your spirit, your innate intelligence." Have health by choice and not by chance. You are not damned by your genes but by your choices.
In the health care crisis we are in, if we changed our lifestyle rather than over-medicate ourselves, would you think we would have a healthier country? There was a study based upon the placebo effect (placebo effect is when they give you a sugar pill rather than the medication without you knowing and still get the same results) which showed the placebo effect works 1/3 of the time. If we used the placebo effect, we would automatically cut our healthcare costs by a 1/3. The main factor would be changing our lifestyle choices. The top 6 diseases/illnesses that kill over 2 million Americans a year can be all prevented with healthy lifestyles. And the beauty of it all, it is not based upon your genes but your choices.
Here is an article about epigenetics that was in Time magazine.

Alzheimer's Disease - Preventable and How?
Posted on 2010-02-06 15:00:50
10 million baby boomers are expected to be affected by Alzheimers. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic form of dementia that results in severe memory loss and eventually death. The average lifespan of someone with Alzheimer’s is about 8-20 years. Since the causes of AD are not clear, there is a correlation with thyroid hormone dysfunction, lack of exercise, diabetes, high sugar diets, heavy metal toxicity, cholesterol (lipid) lowering medication, long term smoking, high blood pressure (HBP) and improper posture (anterior head carriage - decreases blood flow to the brain). "One type of Alzheimer’s, called frontotemporal dementia, is characterized by cellular damage in the front and side regions of your brain. Researchers still have no idea what causes it—only that excess production of a tiny protein fragment called beta-amyloid starts jamming the signals between your brain synapses, blocking information flow, leading to a cascade of damaging events that end in cell death." (Dr. Mercola - 10 Million Baby Boomers Face Alzheimer's Epidemic)
How is Alzheimer's really created? I wish the chiropractic profession had the money to do research on this observation that I learned from top neurologists in our profession. Over 90% of the population has anterior head carriage (AHD). This is when your ear is past your shoulder on a side view of your head to shoulder. If you have this condition for all of your life, it will slowly decrease the blood flow to the brain. When you decrease the blood flow to the brain, it deprives the brain of oxygen, sugar and so forth. Metabolites are not cleansed out of the brain since the brain does not have any lymphatic systems there. The ceberalspinofluid (CSF) is decreased due to abnormal posture in the spine that makes it harder to travel up to the brain. When you have these two affects occuring, it creates havoc to the brain and to the body. Since we are talking about AD, I will talk about the brain. As lack of blood flow and CSF occurs, over a period of time of years, it will start to have an affect on the brain. There are many other factor that take part of this process to accelerate it. I am not saying this is the only way but this is the most common contributor. As stated above, Alzheimer's disease is a state of chronic dementia. There are four types of dementia but most common is Alzheimer's disease. When you deprive the brain of blood and CSF fluid, it will decay, shrink and create plaque (beta amyloid).
What are ways to help prevent Alzheimer's disease?
1. Chiropractic care. Every time a person receives an adjustment, there are a million reactions that occur instantaneously that are all positive for the body but I will mention a couple here. After receiving an adjustment, your body increases the blood flow and oxygen to the brain. An adjustment will decrease oxidative stress in the body, spike your immune system for about 6-7 hours which increases microglia (cleans things in the brain) which may prevent plaque of the brain and fire a variety of neurons in the brain which helps give food to your brain.
2. Exercise is crucial! I call this Vitamin M for movement. The more movement you have in the body, the more nutrients for the brain as explained in number 1. Cross-crawl exercises are amazing for the brain and will help stimulate the neurons that will feed the brain. Exercise will help detoxify the body, lower blood pressure and 59 other benefits on how it helps your overall health. Meditation and yoga is a great benefit for the mind and the body!
3. Diet and Nutrition is huge. Average American consumes about 150lbs of sugar per year. This creates havoc not only on our bodies but our nervous system - specifically the brain. If we consume foods that are pro-inflammatory in our bodies, it will only increase our chances or effects of Alzheimer's disease. Some things to contain in your diet is a high quality fish oil, great source of anti-oxidants (blueberries, noni, goji berries, acai, mangosteen, blackberries, natural cacao powder - contains the highest orac level per cup), a great source of B-complex because when the body is always in a stress environment, these are one of the first to be depleted. This is why people who are stressed out, feel fatigued.
4. Mercury exposure. It can come from a flu vaccine or any type of vaccine that contains mercury or aluminum. Research shows, if you have taken the flu shot more than 8 times in the last 10 years you have an 80% chance of getting Alzheimer's. It also shows, a diet with aspartame (splenda, equal, nutrisweet) will increase your chances of Alzheimer's since this creates havoc for our nervous system and our body. If you have silver amalgams in your mouth, get rid of them for they leak mercury into your body and look up on youtube mercury fillings and see a video that shows you what happens when you have mercury in your mouth.
5. Vitamin D - a study that is only a theory at the moment shows that diabetes may be a cause of Alzheimer's and vitamin D acts like insulin. Vitamin D is known as a neuro-hormone more than a vitamin since it affects a vast amount of our bodies.
6. Cardiovascular heart nutrition - Garlic, CoQu10 (antioxidant) and folate have been shown to help reduce the chance
7. Relationships - as we age, we decline in relationships. People don't visit as often and today's society looks down upon the elderly rather than respect and learn from them. As they have less interaction with society and people, their brain loses out on the interaction from the millions of neuron activity that occurs with interacting with someone. I believe this to be a huge effect. Enough the elderly for you can learn a thing or two. Always remember, they have been on this planet longer than you and probably with their experience, can help you in one way or another. Next time you see an elderly person, just say hello and see how they are doing. If they are bitter, it is not because they are mean and don't like people. Most of the time, they are bitter because as much as they want company in their life, they don't get it.
Empower yourself to understand the benefits of health. If we have a clearly functioning nervous system, well maintained diet, adequate sleep (7-9hrs), long term exercise program (for life), positive mindset, healthy relationships, balanced financials and time management, life is amazing. Do not fall into the sick care model where they wait until you have something rather than creating health within your body. Just think about it. Go into a hospital and talk to a doctor and ask him how can I be healthy and live to have a optimal quality of life for the rest of my life? Is a medication or surgery going to do that for you? I didn't think so. Get informed and get adjusted...

Deepak Chopra Articulates the Chiropractic Message
Posted on 2009-12-11 16:22:41
Deepak Chopra Articulates the Chiropractic Message
The following article appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle. Deepak Chopra very clearly articulates the major tenet of the chiropractic message: that the innate intelligence of the body is far superior to anything that can be added, from the outside in. I took the liberty of making a simple substitution of “innate intelligence” (a chiropractic concept) for Chopra’s term “healing system”. As Chopra clearly states below, Chiropractic’s fundamental concept of relying on the body’s own innate intelligence and ability to self regulate, adapt and heal IS the answer to the so-called “health care crisis”:
Do You Want a Health Care System or a Healing System?
The current debate over health care reform has been about politics and money. There is no escaping either factor. Huge vested interests are spending millions of dollars a day to pressure Congress into minimal reform. But even if the political system were pure as snow, an aging American population makes it inevitable that the health care system is going to grow more and more expensive. These external factors fill the news every day, obscuring a simple fact: Your health depends far more on the healing system your body’s own innate intelligence than the health care system. The healing system innate intelligence is inside your body. Its intricacies are just now being fully explored, but certain broad trends have become clear.
- The healing system Innate intelligence is more flexible and powerful than previously thought. For example, the brain can heal itself, a finding that seemed impossible a few decades ago.
- The healing system Innate intelligence is highly sensitive to outside conditions. Stress and emotional discomfort, for example, can severely compromise your ability to heal.
- Healing affects your genes and how they are expressed. An expressed gene is an active one, and this activity turns out to be far more responsive to your state of mind-body health than previously thought. The old image of fixed genes is rapidly changing to a conception in which the body’s genetic material is eavesdropping on all the experiences in your life. In short, a gene isn’t a thing; it’s a process.
- The healing system Innate intelligence is automatic, but your lifestyle choices make a huge difference in the efficiency of healing.
These factors hold true throughout your life, and if we simplify them to one sentence, this would be it: Change your life and you change your healing system. That may sound like the advice we get constantly about proper diet, exercise, and stress management. But with new evidence showing up every day that lifestyle affects an incurable disease like Alzheimer’s, for example, it’s becoming clear that your own healing system will always be the front-line defender of your well-being, not your doctor or the drug companies. So-called lifestyle diseases used to be restricted to conditions like heart disease, obesity, and type II diabetes, where a link with improper diet was easily demonstrated. Now a wider range of disorders is being linked to lifestyle choices, not by one-to-one correlations but through more general trends. That is, no one can predict exactly which disease you might contract due to poor lifestyle choices, but at the same time, reversing those poor choices has a broad effect in improving your power to heal.
Some recent statistics bring home how crucial it is to rely on the healing system your body’s own innate intelligence rather than the healthcare system:
- 58 million Americans are overweight; 40 million obese; 3 million morbidly obese
- Eight out of 10 people over 25 are overweight
- 78% of Americans don’t meet basic activity level recommendations
- 25% are completely sedentary
- 76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults 30-40 years old since 1990
The statistic that really jumps out has to do with sedentary lifestyles. We are addicted to sitting on the couch watching beautiful, slim, fit actors and athletes on television, with a steady increase in other sedentary activities like surfing the Internet and playing video games. In addition, these activities are reaching into younger age groups, making children less active and therefore more inclined to obesity. Yet the simple fact is that the alternative to being sedentary isn’t joining a gym. The greatest benefit of exercise occurs when you move from being sedentary to light activity like walking, doing housework, gardening, and climbing the stairs. Exercise at higher levels will bring increased benefits, certainly, but this first step brings the biggest single improvement in health. Being sedentary is more harmful to you than forgetting to jog three times a week. In addition, at least one study has shown that when overweight adults are put into groups that walk, jog, or run every day, the group that lost the most weight were the walkers.
Thrashing out health care reform is a defining issue for the coming decade and an inescapable duty. Having said that, I urge you to look inward rather than outward. The most perfect health care system can’t do as much for you, on a daily basis, or do it as cheaply as your own healing system innate intelligence. The evidence is there, waiting to be acted upon.

Top 12 Foods for Healthy Immune Response
Posted on 2009-12-08 07:11:04
By Dr. Mercola
The 2009 flu season is upon us.
Staying well while those around you sniffle and sneeze requires that you extract as much nutrition from your diet as you can, loading up on the foods that pack the biggest nutritional punch.
Avoiding processed foods, grains and sugar will go a long way toward strengthening your immune system. However, you can do even more by selecting foods that are loaded with specific immune boosting nutrients.
Eating a diet rich in the following foods will be far better for your health than loading up on handfuls of supplements, or worse yet, falling victim to vaccines that expose you to health risks far worse than influenza.
Below, I have outlined what I consider to be the absolute best foods you can eat to help protect yourself this season, although the list is certainly not exhaustive.
1. Unpasteurized Grass-Fed Organic Milk
Raw organic milk from grass-fed cows contains beneficial bacteria that prime your immune system and can reduce allergies. It is an outstanding source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, zinc, and enzymes. Raw organic milk is not associated with any of the health problems of pasteurized milk such as rheumatoid arthritis, skin rashes, diarrhea and cramps.
Raw milk also contains beneficial fats that will help your immune system.
Although raw milk availability is limited in the US depending on where you live, you can locate the source closest to you at RealMilk.com.
Whey Protein
Even if you don’t have access to raw milk, you can use a high-quality whey protein that comes from grass-fed cows to receive much of the same health benefits.
The protein in milk is whey protein. Whey is the liquid that separates from the curd during the production of cheese. When the liquid dries into powdered whey, the nutrients become concentrated, and it can be packaged and used in that form.
Whey protein can help you fight off colds and flu because it contains beta-glucans and immunoglobulins, which protect your immune system and support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
2. Fermented Foods
If you are serious about boosting your immunity, then adding traditionally fermented foods is essential.
One of the most healthful fermented foods is kefir. Kefir is an ancient cultured, enzyme-rich food full of friendly microorganisms that balance your “inner ecosystem” and strengthen immunity. Besides kefir, other good fermented foods include natto, kimchee, miso, tempeh, pickles, sauerkraut, yogurt (watch for sugar), and olives.
Friendly bacteria have a powerful, beneficial effect on your gut’s immune system, your first line of defense against pathogens, and aid in the production of antibodies.
3. Raw Organic Eggs from Free-Range Chickens
Before you wrinkle up your nose, raw eggs are an inexpensive and amazing source of high-quality nutrients that many people are deficient in, especially high-quality protein and fat. I am a proponent of raw eggs because they have been so helpful to my own health.
As long as you have a good source for fresh, organic raw eggs, you need not worry about salmonella. To find free-range pasture farms, try your local health food store, or go to http://www.eatwild.com or http://www.localharvest.org.
4. Grass-Fed Beef or Organ Meats
This recommendation is only valid if you are a protein or mixed nutritional type as carb types really should not be eating beef. Grass-fed beef comes from cows that eat what they were meant to eat—grasses, not corn or grains. This results in far greater health benefits for you and for the environment[i] .
Grass-fed beef is very high in vitamins A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, zinc and CLA. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid) is three to five times higher in grass-fed animals than grain-fed animals and is an immune system enhancer.
Don’t confuse “organic” with grass-fed, since many organically raised cows are still fed organic corn, which you don’t want. However, most grass-fed cows are raised organically. And if you can find organic AND grass-fed, that’s ideal.
5. Coconuts and Coconut Oil
Besides being excellent for your thyroid and your metabolism, coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which converts in your body to monolaurin. Monolaurin is the actual compound found in breast milk that strengthens a baby’s immunity.
A great deal of research has been done establishing the ability of lauric acid to enhance immunity. This medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) actually disrupts the lipid membranes of offending organisms.
When selecting coconuts and coconut oil, make sure you choose organic ones that are unrefined, unbleached, made without heat processing or chemicals, and are non-GMO.
6. Locally Grown Organic Vegetables Appropriate for Your Nutritional Type
When it comes to fighting off pathogens, you simply can’t do any better than eating a variety of fresh, organic and preferably raw vegetables for the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes they contain. However, the amount and type of vegetables you should eat daily will depend on your nutritional type.
Make sure the veggies you choose are fresh. The nutrient value drops to practically zero once a fruit or vegetable is canned. For example, take a look at the ORAC value of peaches.
ORAC Values
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, and an ORAC unit or ORAC “score” is a standardized method of measuring the antioxidant capacity of different foods and supplements. The higher the ORAC score, the more effective a food is at neutralizing free radicals. The less free radicals you have, the healthier you will be.
Back to peaches.
A raw, fresh peach has an ORAC score of 1,814. A can of peaches in heavy syrup has an ORAC score of 436, meaning that more than 75 percent of the antioxidants are lost in the canning process.
You can check the ORAC score for many different things at www.oracvalues.com. The higher the score, the better. Please be aware, though, that the total antioxidant capacity of a food alone does not determine its health benefit, which depends on how it is absorbed and utilized by your body. ORAC score is a useful guide, but it is only part of the picture.
7. Blueberries and Raspberries
Blueberries and raspberries rate very high in antioxidant capacity (ORAC of 6,520), compared to other fruits and vegetables. Wild blueberries in particular are potent immune boosters. They contain powerful phytochemicals, such as anthocyanin, which is the pigment that gives blueberries their color. And they are lower in sugar than many other fruits.
8. Mushrooms
Mushrooms strengthen your immune system because they are rich in protein, fiber, vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and other minerals, and even vitamin D -- one of the only foods that can provide you with this essential immune strengthener.
Mushrooms make up a large part of the fabric of the earth. According to Paul Stamets, one of the world’s leading authorities on the health benefits of mushrooms, one cubic inch of soil can contain eight miles of mycelium.[ii]
Mushrooms also contain powerful compounds called beta glucans, which have been long known for their immune enhancing properties. The beta glucans in medicinal mushrooms (especially Reishi, Shiitake and Maitake) are notable for their ability to activate/modulate your immune system.
Beta glucan[iii] enhances immunity through a variety of mechanisms, many of which are similar to those of echinacea or astragalus root. For example, it binds to macrophages and other scavenger white blood cells, activating their anti-infection activities.[iv] Numerous studies support this.
9. Chlorella
As foods go, chlorella is nearly perfect.
Chlorella is a single-cell freshwater algae that acts as an efficient detoxification agent by binding to toxins, such as mercury, and carries them out of your system. It is the chlorophyll in chlorella that makes it so powerful. Chlorophyll helps you process more oxygen, cleanses your blood and promotes the growth and repair of your tissues.
For a full review of all the benefits of this superfood, go to my chlorella page.
10. Propolis
Propolis is a bee resin and one of the most broad-spectrum antimicrobial compounds in the world, if not the broadest spectrum, according to master herbalist Donnie Yance. Propolis is also the richest source of caffeic acid and apigenin, two very important phenolic compounds that aid in immune response.
11. Teas
The two best types of tea for fending off microinvaders are Matcha green tea and tulsi tea.
Green Tea and Matcha
Matcha is the most nutrient-rich green tea and comes in the form of a stone-ground powder, completely unfermented. The best Matcha comes from Japan and has up to seventeen times the antioxidants of wild blueberries, and seven times more than dark chocolate.
Green teas are rich in polyphenols, in the form of natural chemicals called catechins. The most powerful catechin in tea is epigallocatechin (EGCG), which was found in one study to be 25 to 100 times more potent than antioxidant vitamins C and E. And Matcha is more than 100 times as potent in EGCG as regular brewed green tea.
Tulsi
Tulsi tea, coming from the holy basil herb, has been used for thousands of years in the Ayurvedic medicine of India. Not only is this tea loaded with antioxidants, but it has multiple positive health benefits, including supporting your immune health, memory, heart health and vision.
12. Herbs and Spices
Herbs and spices are at the top of the list of high ORAC value foods on planet Earth[v] . There are simply too many good ones to summarize here! So I will simply highlight a few that deserve special mention.
Garlic
Garlic, although not at the top of the ORAC chart (5,346), is incredibly beneficial to your immune system because it offers a triple-whammy: it’s antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal. You should be eating garlic every day. One of the best things about garlic is that bacteria, viruses, and yeast build up no resistance to it, unlike with synthetic antibiotics.
For optimal benefits, garlic should be fresh since the active ingredient is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic cloves. In other words, garlic capsules are basically useless.
Garlic contains allicin, a chemical that is anticarcinogenic. It also has been shown to lower LDL, lower total cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduce your risk of blood clots and stroke, lower homocysteine, and even prevent insect bites -- including mosquitoes and ticks.
Herbs and Spice and Everything Nice
Immunity from common infections involves not only preventing pathogens from taking hold, but also moderating your immune response to invading pathogens.
Complications arise when you experience an over-response to the infection, which is why H1N1 is taking its toll on healthy young adults. Their bodies are over responding -- something called a “cytokine storm.” It’s basically a severe inflammatory response.[vi]
One wonderful thing about plants (and herbs especially) is that they don’t all stimulate your immune system—some modulate it, or act as a buffer.
Here are some of the best herbs and spices for building a strong immune system that functions correctly:
- Honeysuckle and chrysanthemum: good antivirals
- Artemisia: antimalarial
- Andrographis, aka “King of Bitters”: antiviral, and helps modulate inflammatory response[vii]
- Licorice: buffers the inflammatory response by increasing steroid output by the adrenal glands; a good buffer if your immune system is over responding to the flu.
- Turmeric: ORAC score of 159,277; general immune system booster due to its high antioxidant capacity, and an anticancer agent as well; turmeric is 5 to 8 times stronger than vitamins C and E, and even strong enough to scavenge the hydroxyl radical, which is considered by some to be the most reactive of all oxidants
- Black Pepper: Increases the bioavailability of just about all other foods--herbs and other things
- Oregano: ORAC 13,970; active agent is rosmarinic acid, a strong antioxidant; one tablespoon of oregano has the antioxidant capacity of one medium apple
- Cinnamon: ORAC 267,536; powerful antimicrobial agent—found to kill E. coli and many other bacteria; also has anti-inflammatory compounds
- Cloves: THE BIG ORAC GRAND PRIZE WINNER AT 314,446, highest of all foods tested! Contains eugenol; its mild anesthetic benefits are useful for toothaches and sore throats; good anti-inflammatory[viii]
Finally, I recently had a fascinating interview with herbalist Donnie Yance, who shared his basic remedy for flu, should you come down with one.
Make this special tea from a combination of herbs that synergistically cause your body to sweat -- which is very desirable if you want to eradicate a virus from your system. And then drink it hot and often:
- Elderflower (this has been used for hundreds of years for flu)
- Boneset (eupatorium)
- Yarrow
- Linden
- Peppermint
- Ginger
By incorporating some of these fantastic foods, you’ll not only evade the circulating viruses but improve your overall health and longevity at the same time.

Posted on 2009-12-02 12:29:08
Gluten Sensitivity – Who should be tested?
Their is a great degree
of confusion as regarding individuals who should be screened for gluten
sensitivity/intolerance?
Because research has shown that as many as 40% of all Americans may be gluten sensitive, and that 1 in 100 have a severe form of this sensitivity causing the the autoimmune intestinal disease, celiac sprue, a case can be made that everyone in America should be screened for gluten sensitivity.
However, there are people with various risk factors or diseases that are at greater risk of having gluten sensitivity who should undoubtedly be tested.
These conditions include:
• Microscopic colitis (inflammation of the colon)
• Relatives of those with celiac disease or gluten-sensitive individuals
including
• Chronic diarrhea of unknown origin
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Hepatitis C
• Liver disease of unknown origin
• Dermatitis herpetiformis
• Diabetes mellitus
• Degenerative disc disease
• Colon Cancer
• Thyroid disease
• Psoriasis
• Any autoimmune diseases (common ones include):
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
- Lupus
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Sjogren’s syndrome
- Scleroderma
- Dermatomyositis
• Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia
• PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
• Asthma
• Migraine
Headaches
• Osteoporosis
• Iron deficiency
• Failure to thrive (FTT) or short stature in children
• Down’s syndrome
• Mothers of kids with neural tube defects
• Female infertility (includes those with multiple
miscarriages)
• Peripheral neuropathy
• Cerebellar ataxia (unexplained dizziness)

Can an Unhealthy Spine Affect Internal Organs?

Can an Unhealthy Spine Affect Internal Organs?
The Scientific Fact
THE WINSOR AUTOPSIES
As early as 1921, the medical profession validated chiropractic. Henry Winsor, a medical doctor in Haverford, Pennsylvania asked the question:
"Chiropractors claim that by adjusting one vertebra, they can relieve stomach troubles and ulcers; by adjusting another, menstrual cramps; and by adjusting others conditions such as kidney diseases, constipation, heart disease, thyroid conditions, and lung disease may resolve – but how?"
Dr. Winsor decided to investigate this new science and art of healing- chiropractic.
DISSECTIONS
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Winsor was inspired by chiropractic and osteopathic literature to experiment. He planned to dissect human and animal cadavers to see if there was a relationship between any diseased internal organ discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae associated with the nerves that went to the organ.
As he wrote:
"The object of these necropsies (dissections) was to determine whether any connection existed between minor curvatures of the spine, on the one hand, and diseased organs on the other; or whether the two were entirely independent of each other."
UNIVERSITY PERMISSION
The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies he dissected a total of seventy-five human and twenty-two cat cadavers. The following is Dr. Winsor’s description of his findings:
"221 structures other than the spine were found diseased. Of these, 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature. Nine diseased organs belonged to different sympathetic segments from the vertebrae out of line. These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide…for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments and several organs may be supplied with sympathetic (nerve) filaments from the same spinal segments. In other words, there was nearly a 100% correlation between minor curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs."
DR. WINSOR'S FINDINGS:
Heart Disease = All 20 cases with heart and pericardium conditions had the upper five thoracic vertebrae misaligned (T1-T5)
Lung Disease = All 26 cases of lung disease had spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic area Stomach Disease All nine cases of stomach disease had spinal misalignment in the mid-thoracic (T5-T9) area.
Liver Disease All 13 cases of liver disease had misalignments in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9)
Gallbladder All five cases with gallstone disease had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9)
Pancreas All three cases with pancreas disease had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9)
Spleen All 11 cases with spleen disease had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9)
Kidney All 17 cases with kidney disease were out of alignment in the lower thoracic area (T10-T12).
Prostate and Bladder Disease All eight cases with prostate disease had the lumbar vertebrae misaligned
Uterus Two cases with uterine conditions had the second lumbar misaligned
IN CONCLUSION
Dr. Winsor’s results are published in The Medical Times and are found in any medical library. Winsor was not alone in his findings. Similar studies by other researchers have confirmed Dr. Winsor’s conclusion that degenerated and misaligned spines have a high correlation with disease processes.
Despite the continued research and literature correlating the maintenance of health with the maintenance of the spine and the nervous system, chiropractic is the only modern health profession that takes this approach toward health. An unhealthy spine and nerve pressure will cause the body to function at less than 100%. When the body is not functioning properly, it is more susceptible to disease. A chiropractic spinal check-up and adjustment can help in the care and prevention of sickness and disease through a properly functioning nervous system.
POST-SCRIPT
Dr. Henry Winsor’s insights and research are prophetic. Scientists from many parts of the world that continued to research the relationship between spinal misalignments (vertebral subluxation complex) and internal organ disease have expanded upon his studies. This field of somato-visceral disease relationship (its scientific term) is one of the fastest growing and most exciting areas of research in the health care sciences – and chiropractic thrives as its leading advocate.

Aspirin kills 400% more people than H1N1 swine flu

(NaturalNews) The CDC now reports that nearly 4,000 Americans have
been killed by H1N1 swine flu. This number is supposed to sound big and
scary, motivating millions of people to go out and pay good money to be
injected with untested, unproven H1N1 vaccines. But let's put the number
in perspective: Did you know that more than four times as many
people are killed each year by common NSAID painkillers like aspirin? Understanding riskAccording to death statistics tables available on the 'net, you are ten times more likely to die in a car accident this year than be killed by swine flu.Nearly 100,000 Americans die every year from adverse reactions to FDA-approved prescription drugs. That's twenty-five times the number of people killed by H1N1 swine flu (even if you believe the CDC's numbers). So where's the big warning about the dangers of prescription drugs? Why isn't the CDC warning Americans about an "epidemic of dangerous drugs" that poses a far greater threat to your health? The answer, of course, is that health authorities want to push people to buy vaccines that are about to become worthless (they're only good before swine flu fizzles out). And the only way to sell more vaccines to people who don't need them is to hype up a bunch of scare stories by citing bold statistics that make H1N1 swine flu seem really, really dangerous. But the flu is no more dangerous than aspirin. In fact, H1N1 swine flu may be safer than aspirin. Here's another quote from the New England Journal of Medicine: "It has been estimated conservatively that 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur among patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis every year in the United States. This figure is similar to the number of deaths from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and considerably greater than the number of deaths from multiple myeloma, asthma, cervical cancer, or Hodgkin’s disease. If deaths from gastrointestinal toxic effects from NSAIDs were tabulated separately in the National Vital Statistics reports, these effects would constitute the 15th most common cause of death in the United States. Yet these toxic effects remain mainly a “silent epidemic,” with many physicians and most patients unaware of the magnitude of the problem. Furthermore the mortality statistics do not include deaths ascribed to the use of over-the-counter NSAIDS." (Wolfe M. MD, Lichtenstein D. MD, and Singh Gurkirpal, MD, “Gastrointestinal Toxicity of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs”, The New England Journal of Medicine, June 17, 1999, Vol. 340, No. 24, pp. 1888-1889.) Did you catch that? The 16,500 figure for deaths each year doesn't even include over-the-counter painkiller drugs! If you add in those numbers, you're probably looking at something closer to 40,000 Americans kills each year by these drugs. And that makes these drugs 1000% more deadly than swine flu (because 40,000 is ten times greater than 4,000). |
